Womens Water Burden Rose As Covid Lockdowns Hit
Rising demand for water collection in poor countries added to womens burden. Water, sanitation lacking in health, quarantine facilities survey. School closures also limited access to these basic services for girls.

Demand for household water increased by as much as a third during pandemic lockdowns, forcing girls and women to spend more time searching for water for families without access to running water, analysis shows.
COVID-19-related restrictions highlighted inequalities in access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene in the Pacific Island countries, which have some of the worlds lowest rates of access to drinking water and sanitation services.
Womens water burdens have always been heavy and anecdotal evidence indicates that they remain that way in Pacific Island countries, says Vivian Castro-Wooldridge, senior urban development specialist at the Asian Development Banks Pacific department.
Additional burdens have come from women looking after children and other family members spending more time at home due to lockdowns, meaning more water is used and therefore must be collected and managed, Castro-Wooldridge said.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School
If you have a sore throat or headache, wait until you have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours before returning to work. Your child should stay home from school or day care until they have been symptom-free for 24 hours.
If you have strep throat, you can usually return to work or school once the fever is gone and you have taken antibiotics for at least 24 hours.

What Is A Headache With A Sore Throat
Most people get headaches many times during their lives. A headache causes pain in your head or face. The pain may be throbbing, sharp or dull.
A sore throat is pain or irritation in your throat. It might feel scratchy, painful or dry. It often hurts more when you swallow.
Sometimes, you have both a headache and sore throat. Most often, an infection causes those symptoms to happen together.
Preventing A Sore Throat

As sore throats are caused by bacterial or viral infections, they can be difficult to prevent.
If you have a sore throat caused by an infection, you can help prevent the infection spreading by practising good hygiene, such as washing your hands regularly and keeping surfaces clean and free of germs.

Viral And Bacterial Infections
If your throat pain is caused by an infection, you will probably have other symptoms. These may include:
- Sore muscles
See a doctor if you have extreme pain or severe swelling of the tonsils. Throat pain accompanied by a rash is often bacterial. A doctor can decide if you need antibiotics.
It is hard to tell the difference between bacterial and viral throat pain. Strep throat can lead to serious complications if left untreated, so when in doubt, get tested.
Almost any healthcare provider can perform a strep test. This includes family practitioners and urgent care providers.
Symptoms Of Oesophageal Cancer
The most common symptoms of oesophageal cancer include:
- difficulty swallowing
- indigestion or heartburn that don’t go away
- unexplained weight loss
- pain in your throat or behind your breastbone
There are many other conditions that cause these symptoms. Most of them are much more common than oesophageal cancer.

Throat Pain After Surgery
Throat pain that happens just after you have had general anesthesia or a breathing tube inserted is probably not cause for concern. If the throat pain does not go away within a few days, though, you may want to contact your doctor.
Some surgeries, such as a thyroidectomy, can cause throat pain on their own, so keep this in mind.

What Are The Causes
Many believe that the protective sheath of the nerve deteriorates, sending abnormal messages. Like static in a telephone line, these abnormalities disrupt the normal signal of the nerve and cause pain. Most often the damage is from a blood vessel compressing the nerve. Other causes include aging, multiple sclerosis, and nearby tumors.

Omicron Symptoms By Vaccine Type

âEvery patient Ive seen with Covid thats had a 3rd booster dose has had mild symptoms. By mild I mean mostly sore throat. Lots of sore throat. Also some fatigue, maybe some muscle pain. No difficulty breathing. No shortness of breath. All a little uncomfortable, but fine,â Spencer wrote.
From there, it goes downhill â slowly, though.
âMost patients Ive seen that had 2 doses of Pfizer/Moderna still had mild symptoms, but more than those who had received a third dose. More fatigued. More fever. More coughing. A little more miserable overall. But no shortness of breath. No difficulty breathing. Mostly fine,â he said.
For those who just had the one shot of the J& J vaccine and never took a booster, the situation isnât as good.
âMost patients Ive seen that had one dose of J& J and had Covid were worse overall. Felt horrible. Fever for a few days . Weak, tired. Some shortness of breath and cough. But not one needing hospitalization. Not one needing oxygen. Not great. But not life-threatening,â he tweeted.
And then there are the unvaccinated, who by all data are being hospitalized at a rate 15x or more the vaccinated.
Hospitalizations are increasing as Omicron cases reach record highs in NYC and all across the country. But as I noticed on my recent ER shifts, take a look at who needs admission to the hospital for severe Covid? TL DR Its the unvaccinated.

Symptoms Of Glandular Fever
Glandular fever is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus . Symptoms are thought to take about one to two months to develop after infection with the virus.
The most common symptoms of the condition include:
- a high temperature
- a sore throat this is usually severe, but in an older adult, or very young child, the infection may be present without a sore throat
- swollen glands in your neck and possibly in other parts of your body, such as under your armpits
Glandular fever can also cause:
- a general sense of feeling unwell
- aching muscles
Some of these symptoms may develop a few days before the main symptoms mentioned above.
While the symptoms of glandular fever can be unpleasant, most of them should pass within two to three weeks. Fatigue, however, can occasionally last several months.
One In Five People With Covid
Back pain had not been a common COVID-19 symptom before Omicron. Now, however, it ranks among the top 20 symptoms according to the Zoe COVID Symptom Study, in which hundreds of thousands of people log their symptoms every day across the UK. On February 10, Tim Spector, the studys principal investigator, said around one in five people with Omicron have back pain.
So far, its not entirely clear why people seem to be experiencing backache which in some cases has been debilitating and caused limited mobility so much more often when they get sick with COVID-19.
Generalised muscle pain or myalgia could be connected to backache. It could be that COVID-19 causes inflammation which, coupled with muscle pain, manifests as back pain, which is the most common musculoskeletal complaint. But myalgia has been a symptom right from the start of the pandemic and it doesnt explain why backache is becoming much more common now.

Women Are Not Only The Ones Who Carry The Water But Should Be In Their Own Right Those Who Are In Decision
Brenda Rodríguez Herrera, Gender and Environment Network, Mexico
This is particularly the case in informal settlements and rural communities that lack piped water, as men are generally reluctant to undertake water-related tasks because they are seen as womens duties.
Researchers asked people in 14 countries in Africa and South Asia about their biggest concerns regarding water, hygiene and sanitation during lockdown periods. More than half of respondents said no communal WASH facilities were available, accessible or secure.
The survey was conducted by WaterAid, with the University of Leeds and the African Womens Development and Communications Network . Respondents expressed concerns over water and sanitation infrastructure not only in public spaces, but also in healthcare and quarantine facilities, pointing out the lack of clean water and handwashing stations.
Just five per cent of people said hygiene services at quarantine facilities were adequate. One in seven people said facilities were not gender segregated, while 17 per cent said there was a lack of menstrual hygiene management infrastructure.
The 4 Signs Your Sore Throat Could Be Deadly Serious
- 8:03 ET, Dec 2 2021
AS we delve deeper into the winter months, many us are likely to pick up a cold, with one of the most common symptoms being a sore throat.
Most of the time, sore throats are caused by viruses like the common cold, or from smoking.
But there are some conditions that present with a sore throat and can be deadly serious.
The NHS says that most of the time, sore throats will treat themselves and will usually be gone within a week.
To help soothe a sore throat there are things you can do, including avoiding smoking and being around people who smoke.
You should also gargle with warm, salty water and try and eat cool and soft foods which won’t irritate you.
If none of the usual remedies are helping and you have seen a pharmacist then it’s advisable to see your GP.
Here are the four conditions that your sore throat could be a sign of.

Sore Throat With Lower Back Pain
When we are feeling sick, it can be hard to determine how our symptoms are related. For example, if you have a stomach bug and spend a night vomiting, you could wake up the next morning with a sore throat and lower back pain, two symptoms that dont typically go together.
These symptoms arent necessarily due to a medical condition. Vomiting can make your throat raw and sore and leaning over a toilet could cause you to have lower back pain. Even dry air and sleeping in an uncomfortable position could cause these symptoms.
However, sometimes two seemingly unrelated symptoms can be caused by an illness and should be checked out by a medical professional.
What Causes A Rash And Sore Swollen Throat
A rash and sore throat can be inflammatory responses. Your body releases chemicals called histamines when youre exposed to an allergen. While this is meant to be a protective mechanism, histamines can cause a skin rash and a swollen throat.
Sometimes, a rash and swollen throat along with difficulty breathing may indicate a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is usually a result of exposure to something known to cause allergic reactions, such as a bee sting or certain foods.
If you believe you or someone around you is experiencing anaphylaxis, call 911 immediately.
Viral and bacterial infections also can cause a rash and sore throat. These can include the following:

Complementary And Alternative Medicine
Warm, caffeine-free tea can help you stay hydrated. Try adding honey, pectin, or glycerin to your tea. These ingredients are called demulcents. There is limited research on their effectiveness, but they may help relieve irritation and create a soothing film in your throat.
Some people report relief after taking a commercial product called Throat Coat. Throat Coat contains:
- A proprietary blend of other ingredients
A small study showed a significant decrease in pain 30 minutes after using Throat Coat.
Findings on a variety of Chinese herbs and acupuncture are inconsistent. Doctors don’t usually recommend these remedies. Still, some people have found them helpful.
Talk to your doctor before taking herbal medications, especially if you are also taking prescribed medication.
West Nile Virus Infection

West Nile virus is transmitted by being bitten by a mosquito infected with the virus. Its important to note that not all people bitten by these mosquitos will contract WNV.
Symptoms usually appear within 3 to 14 days after being infected and can include:
- sore throat
- respiratory problems
Researchers are working a vaccine for SARS, but there is currently no confirmed treatment. There havent been any reported cases of SARS .

How Is Acute Bronchitis Treated
Acute bronchitis is usually mild and does not cause complications. The symptoms often resolve on their own and lung function goes back to normal.
In most cases, antibiotics are not needed to treat acute bronchitis. Thats because most of the infections are caused by viruses. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. If it has progressed to pneumonia, then antibiotics may be necessary.
Treatment is aimed at treating the symptoms, and may include:
- Avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke
- Cough medicine
- Pain relievers and fever reducers, such as acetaminophen
- Quitting smoking
Tips to help you get the most from a visit to your healthcare provider:
Strep Throat And Scarlet Fever
Strep throat is caused by the group A Streptococcus bacteria. The condition starts with a sore throat. Other symptoms of strep throat include:
- white patches in the throat
- swollen glands
- difficulty swallowing
Some people may also have stomach pain, headaches, or a fever.
Your doctor can diagnose strep throat after a rapid strep test or throat culture. Treatment involves a course of antibiotics.
If you have strep throat, youre at risk for developing scarlet fever, which is due to a bacterial toxin. A sign of scarlet fever is a telltale bright red rash over your body, which typically feels like sandpaper and may peel.
Some people who have scarlet fever also have a strawberry tongue, which appears red and bumpy.
Seek treatment if you suspect scarlet fever. If left untreated, the bacteria can spread to other parts of the body including the kidneys, blood, and lungs. Rheumatic fever is a complication of scarlet fever and can affect your heart, joints, and nervous system.
Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to treat scarlet fever.

Is My Sore Throat And Headache Due To A Viral Or A Bacterial Infection
If you have both a headache and sore throat, it could be a viral or bacterial infection. They have similar symptoms.
If you have a runny nose, cough and hoarse voice, you most likely have a viral rather than bacterial infection. There are no medications to treat viral infections. The virus will go away on its own. You usually feel better in about a week.
If its bacterial, your healthcare provider may prescribe antibiotics, such as penicillin.
