How Good Does The Bose Quietcomfort 45 Sound
As much as Id love to tell you that the Bose QuietComfort 45 offers some sort of improvement over its predecessors, I cant. Its fine, decent evenjust not great. A lot of our gripes with the headset have to do with an overemphasized high-end relative to our target. This does a good job making speech intelligible however, it makes busy tracks with a lot of high-pitched sounds like punk, badly mixed 90s-2000s music, and some pop tracks sound pretty terrible. Of course, theres plenty of blame that falls on the producers of these tracksbut at the time, they were mixing for the bass boost crowd, and consequently werent thinking the world would ever have to deal with equipment with this much high-end emphasis. Its not Boses fault that these tracks werent well-mixed, but its much more grating with a sound like that of the Bose QuietComfort 45.

While both provide world-class noise cancelling, high-quality audio performance and a comfortable fit, there are a few key differences. Should You Get The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700
If you only care about owning the headphones with the best active noise cancellation, then you should get the Sony WH-1000XM5 because they are technically better. The Sony XM5 also has better codec support for high-quality streaming and has a much better microphone setup. That said, at least to me, the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 is clearly the more desirable product.
The new design is stunning, and this headset is an upgrade in almost every way thanks to the finely controlled noise cancelling, the ability to seamlessly switch between devices, USB-C charging, and the touch-sensitive control pad. The NCH 700 even sounds better than the QC 35 II. Its the spec and design upgrade that Bose needed, and moving forward the 700s arent leaving my head.
iPhone owners unencumbered by budgets will reap the most benefit from a pair of AirPods Max headphones. Apples debut over-ear headset has the best noise canceling in town, yes, it even outperforms the Sony WH-1000XM5. In lieu of sound customization, you get the H1 chip and Apples Adaptive EQ, the latter of which adjusts the sound on the fly depending on your environment. We think the AirPods Max sounds quite good and it hews closely to the SoundGuys Consumer Curve.

Is All Active Noise Cancellation The Same
Not at all. Even though the core principle of phase inversion underlies all active noise cancelling headphones, the way the technology is implemented varies dramatically from brand to brand. For one, the number of microphones built into the headphones will have a significant impact on the quality of the noise cancellation. Some brands build as many as 11 tiny microphones into the earcups to accurately measure ambient sound.

External mics are used in whats called feedforward systems, in which the sound is measured and inverted before you hear it. This can give good results, but its unable to measure and correct the actual sound you hear. To fix that, some headphones also use mics inside the earcup for feedback ANC, in which the headphones make real-time adjustments to what youre hearing and apply near-instantaneous corrections to the waveform.
Should You Buy The Bose Quietcomfort 45
If you get the Bose QuietComfort 45, youre getting a competent set of noise cancellers. Adding an EQ to the Bose Music app is also good news.
The Bose QuietComfort 45 at its original price is not worth the money when you can get the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 for $50 USD more, or the Bose QuietComfort 35 II for $80 USD less. However, you can easily find the QC 45 for $279 USD, which sweetens the deal. Still, the biggest downside to grabbing the older headset is the microUSB port. Consequently, if you cant find a good deal on the QC 45, I recommend you find the Bose QuietComfort 35 II on sale somewhere to save you some money over the new one.
When you consider that the Bose QuietComfort 45s problems really are something that could be coded away or developed for, Im not comfortable telling you that this isnt a good headset, or that you should avoid it altogether.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
Although we love a lot about the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, this set does have some drawbacks. The biggest issue is the Bose Music app. Ordinarily, we dont worry too much about buggy apps. However, for these headphones, the Bose Music app is required to do a whole lot of things, including altering which digital assistant you use, turning on the always-listening wake word for your digital assistant, changing the assigned ANC preferences, adjusting how much of yourself you hear during calls, and setting the auto-off timer.
We have a couple of concerns regarding the app. For starters, it can be downright annoying to get the app to recognize your headphones. Both Lauren and Brent had difficulty pairing them, and after speaking with Bose representatives, we can offer the following tips. When you first power on the headphones, if they dont show up in your Bluetooth list, there are two possible things you can do. First, if you use a VPN, turn it off once the initial pairing is complete, you can turn your VPN back on again. Second, you may need to reduce the number of Bluetooth devices that are in your devices paired-items list. Remove or forget as many unnecessary gadgets as possible, and then try the setup again.
Bose emphasizes the 700s augmented-reality capabilities on its website, but as of now this feature is mostly potential. There are only a handful of apps that you can install, and a few work solely in specific cities, so the usefulness is limited.

When it comes to battery life, Bose remains on the conservative end of very good. While products like the Sony WH-XB910N can push upwards of 37 hours in our battery tests, Bose claims only 20 hours and we measured 21 hours, 25 minutes under these same standardized conditions. This is with active noise cancellation on the maximum setting too, so you might be able to squeeze some more if you lower the ANC.
In the app, you can also set a timer to have the headphones automatically turn off after a pre-designated amount of time. So if you take advantage of that too, you should be able to go a long time before you need to throw this back on the USB-C charging cable.
