Bose Sport Earbuds are true wireless Bluetooth earbuds engineered to produce clear and balanced sound in any listening environment. StayHear Max tips mold to your ears with soft silicone and wont fall out, no matter how demanding your workout is. Bose Sport Earbuds go through rigorous quality testing for durability and will resist moisture from sweat and weather. And instead of buttons, a capacitive touch interface lets you simply tap to play or pause music, answer calls, and more. With a battery life of up to five hours get ready to beat your personal best, again and again.

Can Bose Sport Earbuds Be Used With The Bose Music App

Yes. The Bose Music app makes controlling the earbuds and switching between multiple Bluetooth® devices easier than ever with a graphical interface. It also allows you to personalize your Sport Earbuds and access software updates and new features in the future.

The Bose Music app also contains many useful features. You can monitor power usage, customize your VPA preferences, and create a custom Shortcut.

Please note that the Sport Earbuds cannot connect to other apps from Bose, like Bose Connect, Bose Hear, or Bose SoundTouch.

How Long Does The Battery Last On The Bose Sport Earbuds

Upon subjecting the Bose Sport Earbuds to a constant 75dB output, the earbuds last 5 hours, 17 minutes before the batteries depletes. This is above average for true wireless earbuds, and you can always fast charge the earbuds when in a bind: 15 minutes in the case provides two hours of playback. It takes two hours to fully charge the earbuds, and three hours for the case. The Bose Sport Earbuds case doesnt support wireless charging, so you can keep that Qi charging mat tucked away.

Unfortunately, true wireless earbuds are subject to physical limitations which directly affect battery life and product longevity. See, your earbuds house tiny lithium-ion battery cells, much like your smartphone, and these degrade over time. More often than not, you use earbuds for one hour, maybe two, at a time before you place them in the case to be topped up completely. This constant partial-depletion, full-charge cycle hastens battery degradation and results in earbuds that may be unable to hold a significant charge past the two-year mark.

Can Bose Sport Earbuds Take Calls

Yes. Bose Sport Earbuds have an integrated dual-microphone array located in the right earbud to use them during calls. The earbuds must be connected to a smartphone that supports the Bluetooth HFP profile. Call audio will be heard from both the right and left earbuds. In addition to traditional calls, the earbuds will work with many apps that use Voice over Internet Protocol , such as Skype or FaceTime.

What Is A Shortcut How Do I Set It Up

Bose True Wireless Bluetooth Sport Earbuds Headphones

In addition to the other gesture-based controls on the earbuds, Bose Sport Earbuds offer a Shortcut feature. It allows you to set up a custom command, like skip track or check battery level. You can set up your preference in the Bose Music app, then access the feature you prefer by double-tapping the left earbud.

Spend The Extra $100 Or Not

As I said in my review of the QuietComfort Earbuds, if great noise canceling is what you’re after — or you just want the flexibility of having it — you shouldn’t hesitate to spend the extra money on the QuietComfort Earbuds. But if you don’t need active canceling or find it grating , the Sport Earbuds do deliver excellent sound and a comfortable, secure fit. That said, I do think with all the new true wireless models coming out, Bose will ultimately have to get these down in bit in price to make them more competitive.

The earbuds have an IPX4 water-resistance rating.

How Is The Battery Life On The Bose Sport Earbuds

Every time we test a pair of headphones, we subject it to 75dB of constant output, and the Bose Sport Earbuds are no exception. They last 5 hours, 17 minutes on a single charge, which is near average for true wireless earbuds. You can also recharge quickly if you need to fit one more set into your workout 15 minutes of charging will net you two hours of playback. It takes two hours to fully recharge the buds or three hours for the case, but theres no wireless charging to be had.

Bose Sport Earbuds Review: Excellent Sound And Fit With One Downside

While Bose’s noise-canceling QuietComfort Earbuds are getting a lot of attention, the less expensive Sport Earbuds are appealing in their own right.

I first wrote about the Bose Sport Earbuds way back in June 2019. Back then, Bose was calling them the Earbuds 500 and I got to try on a nonworking prototype. At long last, more than a year later, they’re about to hit stores. At $179 , they’re the more affordable, non-noise-canceling alternative to Bose’s flagship QuietComfort Earbuds, which retail for $279 . While Sport models have some downsides — their quality during phone calls could be better, for example — they feature excellent sound, are lighter and smaller than the QuietComfort Earbuds and also slightly more comfortable to wear.

How Do I Charge Bose Sport Earbuds

Bose Sport Earbuds Review: How are Boses new truly wireless headphones for running?

Bose Sport Earbuds are charged by placing them in their charging case. If the case is charged, it will automatically charge the earbuds. The earbuds are charging when the Status Lights on the buds pulse white. Please note: the Status Lights on the case will show the charge status of the case and will only blink if the case is connected to a power source and charging.Allow up to 2 hours for the earbuds to fully charge. Once they are fully charged, the battery indicator light on the earbuds will turn solid white and eventually turn off.If the case is out of power, plug the included USB-C cable into the case and plug the other end into a USB port on a computer or wall charger .

What Is Active Eq

Active EQ involves electronically tuning the frequency response to closely match the proprietary Bose response curve for headphone audio. This response curve is the result of decades of research studying how sound travels to the ear. The closer the frequency response comes to matching the target curve, the more lifelike the audio performance.

True Wireless Earbuds Have Battery Problems

Unfortunately, the Bose Sport Earbuds fall victim to many of the same battery problems as other wireless earbuds. They pack small batteries that slowly degrade over time. Each time you partially deplete your charge and top it back up, youre putting the battery through stress. The problem is that you need the case in order to safely store your earbuds. This is far from a unique problem though, more of a warning.

The good news for everyone is that all hope is not yet lost for the future of tiny batteries. Apple has been making strides with battery management in iOS 14, though the improvements are limited to the AirPods and AirPods Pro right now. Its found a way to keep your earbuds from charging back to 100% until it anticipates your usage.

Bose Sport Earbuds Vs Bose Soundsport Free

The Bose Sport Earbuds make plenty of improvements over the older Soundsport Free earbuds, but theyre not perfect by any means. The Soundsport Free earbuds often struggle to maintain a Bluetooth collection, but thats less of an issue with the new version.

Some listeners may enjoy the sleek new controls on the Sport Earbuds, while others may prefer the tactile controls are great on the Soundsport Free. Bose now lets you tinker with the volume on the Sport Earbuds, but this feature didnt debut with the headset. The new Sport Earbuds also get the edge in sound quality. Before you go out and grab a pair, dont forget that there are plenty of high-quality alternatives to look into.

Can You Use The Bose Sport Earbuds For Phone Calls

The Bose Sport Earbuds have a four-microphone array, which is impressive, but its still an embedded microphone system. Low-frequency sounds are heavily attenuated to reduce the proximity effect, but its taken to an extreme and can make those with moderately and extremely low voices sound off. Bose deserves credit where credit is due, though: the mics do a great job at reducing predictable, low-frequency background noise like the hum of a microwave.

The Sport Earbuds does a good job of prioritizing your voice in windy conditions, though it still picks up the noise. It also has a tendency to sometimes catch some sibilant sounds , although it isnt distracting.

What Bluetooth Codecs Does The Bose Sport Earbuds Support

Both the SBC and AAC Bluetooth codecs are supported, which is good news for iPhone owners since AAC plays well on iOS. If, however, you have an Android phone, your handset may have trouble maintaining high-quality AAC streaming to the Bose Sport Earbuds. If connection issues become too egregious, sometimes the best option is for you to force SBC streaming from the developer settings of your smartphone.

The Bose Sport Earbuds operates via Bluetooth 5.1 firmware. At first go, connection quality was unstable, but Bose fixes this with an update to firmware version 1.0.7-10904+620b71c.

Bluetooth 5.1 has more advanced location features than Bluetooth 5.0, in that it can pinpoint the directionality of your peripherals location, relative to its source device . Bluetooth 5.1 can improve the accuracy of features like find my earbuds, which isnt supported by version 4.1.1 of the Bose Music app.

The 5.1 firmware has a revamped caching system which makes it even more energy-efficient than Bluetooth 5.0. You can expect a minor bump in battery life between 5.1 and 5.0 Bluetooth devices. With this new caching system comes the ability to make faster connections, so automatically connecting to a smartphone should be instantaneous, though it isnt quite perfect with these earbuds. It also makes it easier to broadcast the Bose Sport Earbuds connection status if youre trying to pair it to a device.

How Do The Bose Sport Earbuds Sound

Bose Sport Open Earbuds review: looks crazy but sounds good!

Boses Sport Earbuds under-emphasizes sub-bass frequencies, but not to an egregious degree. The adequate emphasis in the upper bass and mid-range frequencies means it reproduce vocals and instruments accurately, instead of diving into the deep end of bass like other fitness competitors. Bass is only slightly louder than mids, which makes it easier to catch kickdrums without losing too much musical detail.

This kind of performance is pretty close the SoundGuys in-house target curve , which they posit as the most broadly pleasing sound profile. Overall, the frequency response should be pleasing for most listeners, but bass heads may want to look elsewhere.

Boses isolation isnt great, but its not meant to be the best around. Its pretty evident that Bose went for comfort with the Sport Earbuds rather than peak performance. However, the lower isolation may actually be a benefit in the gym its important to hear whats going on around you to keep yourself and others safe.

The Jaybird Vista 2 Brings Solid Noise Cancellation And Durable Construction

The Vista 2 builds upon the success of the first-gen Vista earphones, and this time around, Jaybird includes active noise cancelling. While the Vista 2 cant compete with the Sony WF-1000XM4 or even the Sennheiser CX Plus True Wireless, the passive isolation does most of the heavy lifting to keep background noise out.

The earbuds feature an IP68 rating while the case merits MIL-STD-810G certifications. This headset is pretty pricy, but for the right buyer, its worth it.

How Does The Bose Sport Earbuds Sound

The Bose Sport Earbuds features a tame frequency response for workout earbuds, and it reproduces vocals and string instruments well. Typically, anything billed as a workout headset receives a hefty dose of bass emphasis, but here, bass notes sound reasonable. This makes it a bit easier to hear low-end sounds like a kick drum, without introducing much auditory masking. Bose under-emphasizes treble frequencies between 5-9kHz, but its otherwise not far off the mark of our ideal.

How Strong Is The Connection

Initially the Bose Sport Earbuds had connectivity issues when outside, but that has since been resolved with firmware version 1.0.7-10904+620b71c. Now, the Bluetooth 5.1 connection is great whether inside or outside. My earbuds stay paired with my Galaxy S10e any time Im within the nine-meter radius. The firmware update also fixes auto-reconnect issues that I had: at first, the earbuds failed to reliably reconnect to my smartphone, but they now do so immediately upon opening the case.

Boses Sport Earbuds support both the SBC and AAC codecs, which is great news for iPhone owners. The AAC connection should play nicely on iOS, which is more than we can say for all Android users. If you find the connection problems to be too glaring, you may have to revert back to the SBC codec.

Two Major Selling Points

Really, the two biggest selling points for the Sport Earbuds are their fit and sound. The earbuds include three different sizes of Bose’s new StayHear Max eartips, which have integrated an wing that allows you to get a really secure fit. Most noise-isolating earbuds are designed to nestle in your ears. With Bose earbuds — and that includes the earlier SoundSport Free — the StayHear tip is what does most of the nestling and the main portion of the buds end up protruding from your ears. It’s not the greatest look, but some people love the way Bose earbuds fit, and with the large tips I was able to get a tight seal that passively seals out a lot of ambient noise and allows you to get optimal sound quality.

Sport Earbuds compared to QuietComfort Earbuds .

Bose has made an effort to reduce the size of the Sport Earbuds after some people complained their predecessor, the SoundSport Free, were just a little too big and heavy. And they are smaller. But Bose could only shrink them so much without sacrificing too much battery life and performance, so they’re just not as discreet looking as some competitors.

Owners of the SoundSport Free should note that the Sports Earbuds’ sound is significantly better, with improved clarity and bass definition.

The Sports Earbuds are smaller and lighter than the earlier SoundSport Free.
