Getting a good night’s sleep can help your body recover from a cold or blocked nose12. But having a stuffy nose at night can sometimes make that feel like an impossible task.
That’s why we’ve put together a few top tips to help you get some much-needed shut-eye if youre experiencing congestion at night.

Few things are as frustrating as nasal congestion. When you can’t breathe through nose, it is because the sinus blood vessels and tissues have become swollen with fluid, making it difficult to breathe. This congestion may also trigger discharge, typically referred to as a “runny nose”, as well as discharge into the back of the throat, called post-nasal drip. Adults and children alike can find this minor health problem agitating, especially when it hinders their ability to get proper sleep. If you have small children, this condition can make feeding, breathing, and sleeping particularly difficult.

Trouble Breathing Through Your Nose It Could Be Nasal Airway Obstruction
David Cuthbertson, MD
Trouble breathing through your nose? When our patients come in with this complaint, theyre likely dealing with a blockage in the nose, also known as nasal airway obstruction. This blockage prevents air from flowing smoothly through the nose.
Nasal blockage is not only frustrating, it can also be problematic. Humans are essentially meant to be nasal breathers. The nose is designed to humidify and warm air, so its more comfortable to breathe through your nose. When you cant, its uncomfortable. Plus, it can lead to a dry mouth or sore throat.
Interestingly enough, studies even show improved memory when breathing through the nose. Apparently, the proximity of oxygen to the brain is helpful to cognitive function.
If you have trouble breathing through your nose, its time to find a solution. Nasal obstruction symptoms come from four main areas of the nose. If youre experiencing nasal airway obstruction, heres what may be causing it and what you can do about it.

What Happens In Our Bodies During Mouth Breathing
Even in the absence of oral airflow, mouth breathing, has been shown to increase the propensity for upper airway collapse. The most likely explanation is that jaw opening is associated with a posterior movement of the angle of the jaw, which compromises the oropharynx airway diameter. The oropharynx is the middle part of your throat just beyond your mouth. It also includes your tonsils, the base of your tongue, the sides and walls of your throat and the back part of the roof of your mouth .
This subsequent inferior and posterior movement may shorten the upper airway dilator muscles located between the mandible and the hyoid. The mandible is the largest bone in the human skull, forms the lower jawline and holds your lower teeth in place. The hyoid bone is situated in your necks anterior midline between your thyroid cartilage and your chin. This compromise produces unfavourable length-tension relationships in the associated muscles.

Avoid Nasal Congestion With Nose Breathing
Unless you are sick, the main cause of nasal congestion is mouth breathing. As mentioned before, mouth breathing is actuallyover breathingmeaning that you are expelling too much air with each breath. As a defense mechanism, your body releases mucous to try and slow the rate of breathing. However, this creates a vicious cycle of more mouth breathing, more mucous release and results in a stuffy nose.
Resist The Urge To Blow Your Nose
Its normal to reach for the tissues when you have a stuffy nose. But blowing your nose isnt actually recommended. Why?
Research has shown that it generates excess pressure in the nasal cavities that could cause fluid from your nose to go into your sinuses.
Instead of blowing, use a tissue to dab at a runny nose. If you absolutely must blow your nose, opt for one nostril at a time and blow gently.

Can Dehydration Cause Trouble Breathing
Yes, without proper fluids, the body is unable to provide cells with enough energy. Water moistens the bodys bronchial tubes, lungs, and nasal passages. It also thins mucus and prevents coughing episodes. Drink at least 3.7 liters of water if youre a male and 2.7 liters of water if youre a female every day to stay properly hydrated.
Why Diagnosis Is Important

Because patients cant breathe through their nose, they mouth breathe while sleeping, causing them to snore. Sometimes nasal polyps can make snoring severe enough to tip a patient who snores over to sleep apnea which has a substantial effect on patients.
Patients with sleep apnea dont sleep well, and they are at higher risk for other health problems, including heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and memory and concentration problems.

Two Common Causes: Why You Cant Breathe Through Your Nose
An ENT will complete a physical exam, discuss your symptoms, and might use other diagnostic methods to determine the underlying cause of your breathing issues. The goal is to identify an accurate diagnosis. Then the medical team can help with an effective treatment plan.
The two most common reasons people have trouble breathing through their nose are chronic sinusitis and nasal obstruction.
Sinusitis is a recurring condition that results in congestion and infection in the sinus cavities. If you have an ongoing post-nasal drip, frequent sinus infections, and other ongoing nasal issues, talk to our team about treatment for sinusitis.
On the other hand, the underlying cause of your breathing problems could be a nasal obstruction. This happens when the nasal cavity is blocked by one or more of the following issues:
- A sinus infection
Most of the time, nasal obstruction is a temporary condition that goes away when you recover from the underlying cause. For example, it will be easier to breathe through your nose after feeling better from a head cold.
But there are instances where nasal obstruction requires medical intervention. For example, there might be a physical issue that is blocking the sinus cavity. Common problems include:
- Oversized adenoids
It’s Time For Treatment

You don’t have to suffer from the effects of a deviated septum. Treatment can include antihistamines and decongestants, which can help clear the sinus passages and reduce discomfort. We can also prescribe a nasal steroid spray to reduce swelling.
If you have a truly severe case, a form of surgery known as a septoplasty may be indicated. Surgery is a word nobody likes hearing, but it’s effective. Some septoplasties may be performed as a quick, non-invasive outpatient procedure right here in our office. Additionally, enlarged turbinates can be reduced in our office. This process takes just a few minutes but can be very effective in opening the nasal passageways for better airflow.
Sometimes septoplasties will need to be performed in a surgery center or hospital, like any other surgery. We’ll always use the most conservative, effective treatment option.
And we’re keeping our eye on other, cutting-edge technologies. For example, a pain-free, non-invasive alternative procedure recently passed clinical trials.
Of course, headaches, breathing difficulty, nosebleeds, sinusitis, and blocked nasal passages could be caused by any number of ear, nose, or throat conditions. It’s important to get an accurate diagnosis so we can find the best way to correct the problem. This may require a nasal endoscopy or CT scan.
In most cases, the only way to stop suffering for good is to make an appointment. And you should! You deserve to breathe the way Mother Nature intended.

Why Can’t I Breathe Well Through My Nose
Sinus and nasal complaints are common reasons for a visit to your primary care doctor, an allergist or an otolaryngologist . If you’re asking yourself, “what are the reasons why I can’t breathe through my nose,” two common culprits to consider are a nasal obstruction and chronic sinusitis.
What Are The Benefits Of Nasal Breathing
Nasal breathing provides various benefits. This is because the nose is equipped with a complex filtering mechanism that purifies the air we breathe before it enters our lungs. During expiration, breathing through our nose helps maintain lung volumes and may indirectly determine our arterial oxygenation. Other advantages include:
- Because our nose acts as a filter, it retains small particles in the air, including pollen.
- Our nose adds moisture to the air to prevent dryness in our bronchial tubes and in our lungs.
- Our nose warms up cold air to our body temperature before it reaches our lungs.
- Nasal breathing adds resistance to the air stream, which increases oxygen uptake by maintaining our lungs elasticity.
Conversely, mouth breathing slows the cleaning cilia, slows down the passage of oxygen into the bloodstream, pulls germs and pollution directly into the lungs, and allows dry, cold air in the lungs, which can make secretions thicker.

Saline nasal spray and a bulb syringe can help relieve bedtime congestion in babies and toddlers.
Treat one nostril at a time. First, use saline nasal spray or drops to thin mucus. Then, squeeze the bulb syringe to release the air, place the tip gently into the child’s nostril, and slowly release the tension on the bulb.
As the bulb refills, it pulls the saline and mucus out of the nose. Continue until the nostril is clear. Then repeat on the other nostril. Stop if you notice blood in the mucus or nose.
Older children can benefit from the same tips as adults: Use a cool-mist humidifier, elevate their head in bed, and push fluids during the day to keep the child hydrated.
Children over the age of 4 can be given Benadryl for nighttime congestion due to a cold or virus. Other cold medicine should not be given to children under 6 years old. Check with your pediatrician to find out if antihistamines or cold medicine should be given.
