Q: Can You Combine Any Pair Of Earmuffs With A Hard Hat And Still Get Full Protection From Them Or Can Only Certain Types Of Earmuffs Be Worn With Them
A: The short answer is no. You cannot combine any pair of earmuffs with a hard hat and still get full protection.
are a great piece of PPE. However, the hardhat mounting slots have to match the earmuff mounting clips. There has been some effort to provide hard hat mounting slots that are universal for earmuffs, but that is not the case with all brands and models.
There has been great progress in terms of the slot design and mounting hardware of muffs for full brim style hardhats. That was an issue in the past for that style of hardhat but isnt any more. Again though, you have to be certain that the style and type of hardhat you buy has that feature and has the type of muff rated for the noise exposure you or your workers are exposed to. The Noise Reduction Rating is a critical factor in the selection of any hearing protection.
Noise is a well-known and documented hazard. Workers who are subjected to unprotected exposure to noise may experience both temporary and permanent levels of hearing loss. This is where PPE comes in. That said, hearing protection must match the exposure a hearing conservation program is also a necessary part of your safety management system. This program must include baseline audiometric testing or threshold audiograms, followed by annual audiometric testing to help determine:

What To Consider When Choosing The Best Earmuffs For Hard Hats
When you decide to purchase your earmuffs, youll need to find the correct fit and the correct amount of hearing protection.
You may want to select on the basis of a particular acoustic hazard or select earmuffs manufactured specifically for the industry you work in.
If you work for large events with amplification, your needs will be different than airport workers or professional tradesmen at construction sites.
Specific earmuffs are made for musicians just as another type of earmuffs is made for firing range practices. You should consider your:
- Pertinent health and work protection laws
- International standards
You will also want to consider comfort. If you need to wear your earmuffs for extended periods of time, consider:
- Weight. The heavier the earmuffs, the more discomfort you may experience during prolonged use.
- Padding. Padding will be important during use for longer periods. A fabric lining comprehensive of cushioning or a pad for the forehead may be features to look for.
- Chinstraps. You may prefer a good adjustable chin strap, so your earmuffs arent moving too much, causing chafing or less noise protection.
Finally, the cost may be a consideration, especially if you are on a budget. If you are exposed to considerable risk, you will need more protection.
This may translate into a higher cost, but protecting your hearing is worth every penny you are able to invest.

Earplugs Are An Option
Disposable earplugs are a good choice for people with hygienic concerns. If you choose disposable earplugs, they are pretty inexpensive, very lightweight, and often quite adaptable to various ear canal shapes and sizes.
They also are a viable option at any temperature. The NRR number will indicate if they are adequate for a factory environment.
Reusable earplugs are also a viable choice if you dont want to mount earmuffs. They may also prove to be a better economical choice in the long run. The market now offers earplugs with noise-canceling technology.
This technology cancels dangerous noise but will still allow you to hear conversations with colleagues if this is necessary to your work or also to your safety in the work environment. These will tend to be a bit more expensive. This technology can also be found in earmuffs.

Noise On The Job And In The Workplace
Employers are required by law to assess noise pollution and reduce or eliminate any potential risks as a result. Protection should be selected in relation to the level of risk present.
If an employer can reduce noise through the use of quieter machinery or tools, or the use of silencers, this is ideal.
An employer can also attempt to move the sources of noise as far away from workers as possible. When these options are not plausible or do not sufficiently reduce the amount of noise to protect workers hearing, protective devices become necessary.
As per NIOSH, if noise reaches 85 decibels, employers must provide hearing protection. Consideration is given to average levels of noise exposure on any one day or during a workweek as well as the maximum level of noise reached.
Consider some approximate noise levels such as a chain saw that will produce anywhere from 80 to 120 decibels when in operation.
A jackhammer, which can easily be found at construction sites and is similar to the engine of a jet will produce noise from 120 to 160 decibels, while a gunshot in your vicinity can emit more than 160 decibels.
Some hard hats may come directly with a system for noise cancellation together with a transparent visor for face protection. Also, some professionals that have constant exposure to extreme noise may opt to wear both earplugs and earmuffs together.

Best Hearing Protection With A Hard Hat
We invited a group of construction pros and industrial tradesmen to test our selection of earmuffs that need to be mounted on a hard hat and give us the lowdown on which ones work best and why. In the end, we came up with two top choices for you.
Our top choice in earmuffs is BJKing 004 Noise Reduction Safety Earmuffs for Hard Hat Attachment because of the excellent NRR of 34/28 and the ample compatibility for mounting on hard hats. However, we have included a top choice in earplugs as well.
Some of our team of professionals preferred to just wear a good pair of noise-reducing earplugs with their hard hats for both comfort and convenience. So, our top choice in earplugs for under a hard hat is 3M Peltor EEP-100 Earplugs because they feature noise reduction technology and have a storage case that doubles as a charger.

A recurring question for tradesmen who need to wear a hard hat as part of their PPE in the workplace is If any earmuffs can be used together with a hard hat and will they offer full hearing protection?
Unfortunately, the answer is No. Its not that simple. A combination of any type of earmuffs with any type of hard hat will not guarantee full protection. Now, however, manufacturers of PPE are offering earmuffs or ear cups that can be directly mounted onto a hard hat.
