Ear Drops For Pain And Infection

Natural Remedies for Ear Infection

Ear infection treatments in adults many times can be effectively administered with the aid of ear drops.

You can use naturopathic ear, alcohol and vinegar ear drops, or hydrogen eardrops for pain and infection.

Take note that naturopathic ear drops should not be used by people with middle ear infections or perforated eardrums.

Ear drops can be used both to treat and prevent ear infections and sometimes to remove earwax.

Eardrums for home remedies for ear infections in adults could be bought over-the-counter or prescribed by your doctor.

What kind of ear drops do you choose and for whatever reason you use them, its very important to administer them correctly.

This is important to allow the medication to enter your ear canal and actually treat your ear problem.

Here are the instructions to guide and help you use ear drops properly for your safety.

Donts

  • Dont use a chipped or cracked dropper
  • Dont allow the tip of the dropper has direct contact with your ear, fingers, or any other surface.
  • This is because it could pick up bacteria or germs that can cause an ear infection.
  • Dont warm the drops in hot water so they dont become too hot and hurt your ear.
  • Dont share your ear drops with anyone to prevent the spread of germs and infections.

You should also be aware of how long the ear drop is safe for use.

You can ask your pharmacist or doctor about the expiration date for prescription ear drops.

Never use expired ear drops, throw them away!

Get Help From A Professional

If you have a lot of earwax or if its jammed deep into your ear canal, its best to get help from a doctor.

Sometimes a primary care doctor will be able remove it during an appointment. Other times youll need to see an ear, nose and throat doctor who will use a special tool to look into your ear, loosen the wax and gently suction it out.

A doctor will also be able to provide recommendations for how you can safely remove earwax at home if necessary.

Symptoms Of Dog Ear Infection And How To Diagnose

One of the most common signs of a dog ear infection is when your pup exhibits pain and discomfort in their ears. This usually presents as excess pawing at their ears, recurrent head shaking, and constant head tilting. Additionally, you may notice a smelly odor coming from your dogs ear or an accumulation of dark or yellow-colored wax.

To diagnose a dog ear infection, it is important to take your pet to the veterinarian for an exam. During this exam, the vet will use specialized tools such as an otoscope to view the deeper tissue in the ear canal. They may also use a cotton swab to obtain an ear discharge sample which can be analyzed for signs of infection.

In addition to a physical examination, your vet may run lab tests to help with the diagnosis of your pups ear infection. This might include a culture and sensitivity test to identify the bacteria in your dogs ear and determine which antibiotics would be most effective against it. X-rays may also be taken to look for masses or foreign bodies in the ear canal.

Lastly, your vet may opt for an endoscopic examination if the outer part of your dogs ear canal doesnt reveal any cause for the infection. Endoscopy allows vets to view the interior parts of the ear canal, which couldnt be seen in plain sight. By using this method, they can identify any underlying issues or conditions contributing to your pups infection.

What Does It Feel Like When Ear Tubes Come Out

You probably wont feel any symptoms as your ear tubes are coming out. You probably wont feel anything. Often people dont even know when the tubes fall out because they get caught in ear wax and theyre so tiny you dont even know theyre there. You might only find out theyve fallen out during a follow-up appointment when your doctor looks in your ears.

After the tubes fall out, watch for symptoms of ear infection and fluid buildup. If you or your child continue to have middle ear problems, your doctor may recommend having ear tube surgery again.

    When To See The Doctor

Any time you are seriously worried about your child, it is absolutely appropriate to call or make an appointment to see his doctor. Like most docs who take care of kids, I never mind getting a late night call or an office visit from a worried parent.

When I received the call mentioned earlier, I reassured Janie’s mom that since Janie had a cold, was able to be settled easily with only one age-appropriate dose of Tylenol, and had what I would consider a low fever at its highest , this was likely a mild case of an ear infection and that waiting and watching overnight would be totally safe and appropriate.

I asked her to please call me back if Janie got worse. But if by morning she was better or even about the same, she could continue to wait and watch but that at this point, and in most cases of acute otitis media, no antibiotics were needed. We discussed the safe use of Tylenol and ibuprofen, since she didnt have any herbal remedies for pain relief at home (stocking a home herbal medicine chest is a great idea and will be discussed in a future blog and is covered extensively in my course Healthy All Year.

Heres when I absolutely ask my patients to bring their little one in for a look-see:

    • Your child is under 6 months old
    • There is pain that wont resolve
    • There is high fever and persistent ear pain
    • There is drainage from the ear
    • There is neck pain or stiffness

    Ear Infections In Children

Why do children get ear infections?

Infants and young children between 3 months old and 3 years old are much more likely to get ear infections than adults. In fact, most children will have at least one ear infection. The main reasons are:

    • Differences in Eustachian tubes. These tubes in your ears are shorter and narrower when youre younger, so its easier for them to become blocked. Additionally, the tubes in infants and young children are usually more horizonal than those in adults which means that its harder for fluid to drain.
    • Their developing immune system. When infants are about 6 months old, they start losing some of the immunity they were born with. At the same time, babies start becoming more social, sharing both toys and germs. Breastfeeding is one effective way to help strengthen your childs immune system.

When Your Doctor May Prescribe Antibiotics

While every situation is unique, there are several factors that doctors consider when recommending antibiotics:

    • What they see If the infection is in the outer ear, it may be clear its caused by bacteria. In this case your doctor may recommend antibiotic eardrops to help clean out the ear infection. If your doctor cant see the ear infection because its on the inside of the ear, they may not prescribe antibiotics right away.
    • How long its been Viral infections typically go away on their own in 1-2 weeks. If the ear infection has been around for less than a week, your doctor may recommend waiting to see if the ear infection goes away on its own, a sign that its viral. If its been more than a week, your doctor may recommend starting antibiotics.
    • Your childs age The doctor may be more likely to prescribe antibiotics for children under 2 years old, especially if they have infections in both ears, have pain thats moderate to severe, or have a fever.
    • Symptoms If you or your child have certain symptoms, such as an extremely high fever or severe dehydration, your doctor may recommend starting antibiotics sooner.
    • Medical conditions Your doctor may recommend starting antibiotics right away if there are certain medical conditions, such as cleft palate or repeat infections, that could lead to problems with an ear infection. In most cases, antibiotics will also be recommended when someone with a cochlear implant gets an ear infection.

The Best Foods To Boost Your Dogs Immune System Against Ear Infections

A strong immune system is essential for dogs to fight off ear infections. Adding certain foods to your pups diet can help boost their immunity and keep them healthy throughout the year.

What Medications Are Used To Treat Baby Ear Infections#

Traditionally, ear infections were treated with antibiotics like amoxicillin. However, in more recent years, doctors have adopted a wait and see approach to prescribing antibiotics, at least for kids 2 years old and up. Most of the time, babies under 2 need an antibioticIf your baby is prescribed an antibiotic, its important to give it for the full prescription course, usually 7 to 10 days. Its likely that your baby will start to feel better within a few days, but if you stop the medication before the course is done, you risk the infection returning. Many pediatricians recommend giving your baby probiotics while they are taking antibiotics. In doing their jobs, antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria, and the depletion of good bacteria can sometimes cause digestive discomfort. Probiotics can replenish the good bacteria your baby needs, and ease any digestive upset.
