Throat Pain After Surgery
Throat pain that happens just after you have had general anesthesia or a breathing tube inserted is probably not cause for concern. If the throat pain does not go away within a few days, though, you may want to contact your doctor.
Some surgeries, such as a thyroidectomy, can cause throat pain on their own, so keep this in mind.
How Is A Diagnosis Made
When a person first experiences throat pain, a primary care doctor or dentist is often consulted. If the pain requires further evaluation, a neurologist or a neurosurgeon may be recommended.
The diagnosis of neuralgia is made after carefully assessing the patient’s symptoms. If glossopharyngeal neuralgia is suspected, the doctor will attempt to trigger an episode by touching the back of the throat with a swab. If that causes pain, a topical anesthetic is applied to the back of the throat and the doctor will try the pain stimulus again. If pain is not triggered while the area is numb, glossopharyngeal neuralgia is diagnosed.
Other tests may include an MRI or MRA to look for tumors or a blood vessel compressing the nerve.
Inflammation Of The Epiglottis
Epiglottitis is inflammation of the epiglottis, tissue that covers the trachea , which helps prevent coughing or choking after swallowing. It is usually caused by the bacteria H. Influenzae but can also be caused by other bacteria or viruses that cause upper respiratory infections.
Rarity: Rare
Top Symptoms: being severely ill, shortness of breath, fever, sore throat, pain with swallowing
Symptoms that never occur with inflammation of the epiglottis: cough
Urgency: Emergency medical service

What Causes Your Left Side Of Throat To Hurt
Pain in the throat can be severe and usually gets worse when swallowing. The pain can affect one side of the throat, or both sides of the throat. Sometimes the pain from the throat also irradiates to the ear. This occurs due to the fact that nerves to the back of the throat are very close to the nerves from the ear. Pain in one side of the throat usually occurs due to inflammation of the tonsils, enlarged lymph nodes and lymphatic tissue.
What causes pain on the left side of the throat?
Most common causes of unilateral throat pain include:
Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils. Tonsils are located on each side of the throat, at the back and they help our body fight infections. Usually tonsillitis is caused by viral infections, even though it could be caused also by bacterial infections. Signs and symptoms of tonsillitis include: sore throat, swollen tonsils, difficulty swallowing, tender lymph nodes on the sides of the neck, fatigue, fever, etc. Tonsillitis usually affects young children between preschool and teenagers, however tonsillitis can affect anyone. Treatment usually requires antibiotics for bacterial infections. Bed rest and plenty of fluids, especially for viral infections are recommended.
What Are The Causes

Many believe that the protective sheath of the nerve deteriorates, sending abnormal messages. Like static in a telephone line, these abnormalities disrupt the normal signal of the nerve and cause pain. Most often the damage is from a blood vessel compressing the nerve. Other causes include aging, multiple sclerosis, and nearby tumors.

Other Reasons For Sharp Pains On Left Side Of Head
Some types of chronic headaches that dont give you any relief can be associated with serious conditions.
Stroke. Although not common, Dr. Laurence C. Newman on WebMD says that a stroke can start with a sudden severe migraine-like headache. The more usual signs of stroke are weakness on one side of the body, loss of speech or slurring words, and confusion.21
Brain tumor. Persistent, chronic headaches that cause vise-like squeezing head pains can be a sign of a brain tumor. However, researchers at Johns Hopkins reassure people that most headaches, even severe headaches are caused by migraines, clusters headaches, or tension headaches.22
Nummular headaches. Although not serious, nummular headaches can cause persistent headaches on one side of your head. The headache pain is sometimes made worse by intermittent sharp, stabbing pains that last for up to 2 hours. The pain is usually localized to an area 2-6 cm in diameter.23
Preventing Viral And Bacterial Infection
Hand washing is the best way to prevent sore throats caused by viruses and bacteria. Wash for at least 20 seconds. Make sure you wash from your fingernails to your wrists. Thorough hand washing greatly reduces your chances of getting an infection. Hand sanitizer is a good alternative when you are not near a bathroom.

The pharynx is a passageway at the back of the throat that connects the nasal cavity to the esophagus. Symptoms of pharyngeal cancer can resemble cancer in the larynx with soreness on one side, a lump, ear pain and difficulty swallowing.
Cancer in the nasopharynx the top part of the throat closer to the nasal cavity often is noticed first as a swollen lymph node in the neck and can cause a stuffy nose, nosebleeds and hearing loss.

Abscessed Or Impacted Tooth
Poor dental health may lead to swallowing pain.
Ignoring cavities can result in abscesses. Abscesses can lead to pain in your neck, jaw, and ear and cause swallowing problems. You may feel these symptoms just on the side with the infected tooth.
Impacted wisdom teeth can affect your jaw. They may also lead to a cyst developing on one side of your mouth. This could interfere with swallowing.
Wisdom teeth become impacted when they cannot grow in as a normal set of molars. Instead, they stay below the gumsâ surface.

How Is Epiglottitis Diagnosed
Due to the seriousness of this condition, you may receive a diagnosis in an emergency care setting simply by physical observations and a medical history. In most cases, if your doctor thinks you might have epiglottitis, theyll admit you into the hospital.
Once youre admitted, your doctor may perform any of the following tests to support the diagnosis:
- X-rays of your throat and chest to view the severity of the inflammation and infection
- throat and blood cultures to determine the cause of infection, such as bacteria or a virus
- a throat examination using a fiber optic tube
Prevent Neck Pain On The Left Side: Best Sleeping Positions
In preventing neck pain not associated with an underlying medical condition, choosing a proper sleeping position may help.
The best sleeping position for neck pain may be on the back. Some may find good results by lying on the side as well. The natural arching of the back and neck can be achieved by using a rounded pillow form under the neck with a flat pillow for your head.
Place a small horizontal neck roll on the inside of a pillowcase, underneath the pillow. A feather-filled pillow or one containing memory foam may also give the same head-neck displacement.
When traveling, use a u-shaped pillow to stabilize your head and neck to avoid overextending the neck muscles while sleeping.
In addition to the sleeping position, you may also prevent neck pain with a proper nightâs sleep. Insomnia and frequent waking episodes may cause constant movement that leads to neck pain.

What Is The Treatment For Epiglottitis
If your doctor thinks you have epiglottitis, the first treatments typically involve monitoring your oxygen levels with a pulse oximetry device and protecting your airway. If your blood oxygen levels become too low, youll likely get supplemental oxygen through a breathing tube or mask.
Your doctor may also give you one or all of the following treatments:
- intravenous fluids for nutrition and hydration until youre able to swallow again
- antibiotics to treat a known or suspected bacterial infection
- anti-inflammatory medication, such as corticosteroids, to reduce the swelling in your throat
In severe cases, you may need a tracheostomy or cricothyroidotomy.
A tracheostomy is a minor surgical procedure where a small incision is made between the tracheal rings. Then a breathing tube is placed directly through your neck and into your windpipe, bypassing your epiglottis. This allows exchange of oxygen and prevents respiratory failure.
A last resort cricothyroidotomy is where an incision or a needle is inserted into your trachea just below the Adams apple.
If you seek immediate medical attention, you can expect a full recovery in most cases.
What Causes A Sore Throat On One Side
Whether it is the left or right side of your throat, discomfort and pain can be presented by various health conditions ranging from mild to severe.
Some can be taken care of with home remedies, while more serious symptoms should be treated by your doctor.
1. Dental procedures or conditions can result in a sore throat on only one side. An abscessed tooth or gum disease can cause your throat to ache, particularly if there is an infection that can spread into the throat region.
The position you rest in during a procedure can also affect your breathing ability, resulting in a sore throat.
2. Common cold or flu symptoms most often include a sore throat. You may feel this more on one side during resting hours if you sleep on one side as the mucus will drain into your throat from your nose.
3. Swollen lymph nodes from an illness such as a cold or ear infection can be felt on either side at times. When the neck lymph nodes became enlarged, they are usually felt more on one side.
4. Vocal cord nodules are calluses that appear on the vocal cords after continuous use of voice with little rest. They can make a particular spot in the throat very sore.
7. Peritonsillar abscess can cause the throat to be very painful on one side. A complication of tonsillitis, this develops from a pus-filled sore near the tonsils.
