Respiratory conditions like viral pharyngitis , hay fever, and other allergic reactions can all cause this type of symptoms. Pharyngitis due to a viral infection will go away on it sown, but symptoms of hay fever and other allergies typically come and go over time. Keep track of your symptoms. If you are experiencing troubling symptoms that do not go away, seek the advice of a doctor.
While the list below can be considered as a guide to educate yourself about these conditions, this is not a substitute for a diagnosis from a health care provider. There are many other medical conditions that also can be associated with your symptoms and signs. Here are a number of those from MedicineNet:
Rsv Symptoms And Prevention
With RSV, symptoms usually show within four to six days after getting infected.
Symptoms of RSV infection usually include:
These symptoms usually appear in stages and not all at once. In very young infants with RSV, the only symptoms may be irritability, decreased activity and breathing difficulties.
How to prevent RSV
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
- Avoid touching your nose or eyes, especially while around sick people.
- Clean surfaces with disinfectants that kill viruses to halt the spread of colds.
In addition, people with cold-like symptoms should not interact with children who are at high risk for severe RSV disease. Those at high risk include premature infants, children younger than age 2 who have chronic lung or heart conditions and children with weakened immune systems or neuromuscular disorders.
What Are The Signs Of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome In Children
Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children causes symptoms that are due to inflammation throughout the body. Doctors are trying to find out how these symptoms are related to coronavirus infection.
Symptoms that have been seen in kids include:
- swollen hands or feet
- swollen lymph nodes
If your child has any of these symptoms, call your doctor. Kids with this inflammatory syndrome may quickly get worse. Go to the ER right away if your child looks very sick, has trouble breathing, has chest pain, has very bad belly pain, looks bluish in the lips or face, or is very sleepy or confused.

What Does Covid Sore Throat Feel Like
Have COVID-19 questions?
Well, it can feel exactly the same as a cold, according to Brian Curtis, MD, vice president of Clinical Specialty Services for OSF HealthCare. That makes it hard to tell the difference between a cold and a mild case of COVID.
Its even harder to tell the difference knowing that sore throat is a COVID symptom. The common cold and the virus that causes COVID-19 are both the same type of virus called a coronavirus and can cause similar symptoms.
One of the early symptoms of COVID is a fever. However, as different strains of COVID spread, its possible to have a COVID sore throat and no fever or other symptoms.
But, Dr. Curtis said, its more common to have other symptoms in addition to a sore throat if you have COVID.
Only about 5-10% of COVID-19 patients will have an isolated sore throat. Usually, they will have a touch of fever, loss of taste and smell and difficulty breathing.

How Do Colds Spread
In general, a person becomes contagious from a few days before their symptoms begin until all of their symptoms have gone. This means most people will be infectious for around two weeks.
You can catch the virus from an infectious person by:
- touching an object or surface contaminated by infected droplets and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes
- touching the skin of someone who has the infected droplets on their skin and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes
- inhaling tiny droplets of fluid that contain the cold virus these are launched into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes
Colds spread most easily among groups of people in constant close contact, such as families and children in school or day care facilities. Theyre also more frequent during the winter, although its not clear exactly why.
A number of different viruses can cause a cold, so its possible to have several colds one after the other, as each one may be caused by a different virus.
How Do I Know When To Stay At Home
If you have any of these symptoms plus a high temperature or you don’t feel well enough to carry out normal activities, you’re advised to stay at home in England.
You should avoid contact with other people, in particular those who are at high risk of becoming seriously unwell if they get Covid.
People with symptoms are no longer advised to test for Covid in England, but if you do have a positive result, you should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for five days after the day you took your test.
Many people will no longer be infectious after five days but some may still be able to pass on the virus for up to 10 days.
People with symptoms are still advised to take a PCR test in Scotland and Northern Ireland or a lateral flow test in Wales. Anyone who tests positive in the three nations is asked to isolate.
When testing ends in Scotland, people who feel unwell will be advised to stay at home until they feel better.

Is It A Cold The Flu Or Covid
All these illnesses are caused by viruses that infect the respiratory tract. All are contagious and can spread easily from person to person. And they cause some similar symptoms. So it can be hard to tell them apart.
Here are some things to look for if your child gets sick.
Symptoms Of The Omicron Ba5 Variant Include Runny Nose Sneezing And Sore Throat
- The Omicron BA.5 variant is the dominant coronavirus strain in the US, according to the CDC.
- Its symptoms are similar to past Omicron subvariants: a sore throat, sneezing, and a runny nose.
- Experts say BA.5 infections may lead to less severe cases of COVID-19 than early ones.
The Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant coronavirus strain in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While this variant is fast-spreading, it appears to be less severe than early versions of the virus, and its symptoms are similar to those of other Omicron subvariants, experts say.
Symptoms of Omicron infections are typically coldlike, including a sore throat, sneezing, and a runny nose. Symptoms like fever, chills, and cough are still seen sometimes in Omicron cases but not as frequently as in earlier variants of the virus.
Like past variants in the Omicron lineage, BA.5 seems to primarily affect the upper respiratory tract, according to experts at the University of Colorado. Symptoms like a sore throat and nasal congestion indicate that the virus has infiltrated the nose and airways, but Omicron is less likely to affect the lungs compared with past variants, Drs. Thomas Campbell and Steven Johnson, two infectious-disease experts, said in a news release.

Who Is At High Risk From Covid
For most people who’ve been vaccinated – and children, even if they haven’t had a jab – Covid infections are usually mild, and typically last for up to a week.
But some groups are still at higher risk and need protecting from Covid and other respiratory infections, including:
- people of any age whose immune system means they are at higher risk of serious illness
- people of any age with certain long-term conditions
Some very young children who were born prematurely or who have heart conditions are also at risk from RSV, another respiratory virus.

Runny Nose Or Nasal Congestion
A runny nose or nasal congestion are two of the most common symptoms of a cold. These symptoms result when excess fluid causes blood vessels and mucous membranes within the nose to swell. Within three days, nasal discharge tends to become thicker and yellow or green in color. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , these types of nasal discharge are normal. Someone with a cold also may have postnasal drip, where mucus travels from the nose down to the throat.
These nasal symptoms are common with colds. However, call your doctor if they last more than 10 days, you begin to have yellow/green nasal discharge, or a severe headache or sinus pain, as you may have developed a sinus infection .
How To Prevent Catching A Cold
A person with a cold can start spreading it from a few days before their symptoms begin until the symptoms have finished.
The best ways to avoid catching a cold are:
- washing your hands with warm water and soap
- not sharing towels or household items with someone who has a cold
- not touching your eyes or nose in case you have come into contact with the virus it can infect the body this way
- staying fit and healthy
The flu vaccine helps prevent flu but not colds.

Despite Symptoms Its Not The Flu
COVID-19 is not the flu.
As one of a class of pathogens known as coronaviruses, COVID-19 is actually more closely related to the common cold than the seasonal flu.
However, despite some overlap, the typical symptoms of COVID-19 are more similar to the flu than the common cold .
The Delta variant, however, may have more cold-like symptoms.
In terms of differentiating between flu and COVID-19, it can be almost impossible to distinguish, Dr. Jake Deutsch, co-founder and clinical director of Cure Urgent Care and Specialty Infusion in New York. Thats why people are recommended to have flu vaccinations so it can at least minimize the risk of flu in light of everything else.
Fevers, body aches, coughing, sneezing could all be equally attributed to them both, so it really means that if theres a concern for flu, theres a concern for COVID-19, Deutsch said.
When and where you get sick might be the best predictor of whether you have a cold, the flu, or COVID-19, Yildirim said.
People living in communities with low vaccination rates and high rates of COVID-19 are more likely to have COVID-19, she said, especially outside of cold and flu season.
However, she said, differentiating becomes more difficult during the winter, when all three diseases may be widespread.
If you have a mild case of COVID-19, the flu, or a cold, treatment is geared toward management of symptoms, said Cutler.
Mild cases of COVID-19 are thought to last approximately 2 weeks, said Cutler.
Runny Nose Sneezing And Cough Is It A Cold Or Allergies
While patients with a cold and allergies generally have the same symptoms , they are different diseases.
A cold is caused by a virus that affects the upper respiratory tract . This leads to symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, sore throat, and sneezing. Patients with a cold are more likely to have general aches/pain and low-grade fever than patients with allergies. Nasal drainage is usually thick and yellow/green.
There are many different viruses that cause a common cold with the most common being rhinovirus. Symptoms usually last for 1-2 weeks. A cold is acquired when coming into contact with the virus from another person either by direct physical contact from a contaminated surface or from respiratory droplets from a sneeze or cough. Treatment includes pain relievers such as Tylenol, nasal decongestants, expectorants and cough suppressants.
On the other hand, allergies are caused by an abnormal immune response in the body to an environmental substance. The substance can be inhaled, ingested or come into contact with the skin. The body is too hypersensitive to these substances which include such substances as pollen, dust, medications, bee sting and peanuts.
This is all mediated by a specific antibody in the body called IgE. Allergy treatment focuses on reducing this hypersensitizes by blocking certain parts of this process such as antihistamines block histamine and allergy shots decrease IgE levels.
